Portugal Inflation Calculator
Enter an amount and two years, and see what it was worth (or will be worth) today -- with INE's official CPI series, from 2000 to 2025.
What the CPI measures
The Consumer Price Index tracks the changing cost of a representative basket of goods and services -- food, housing, transport, health, leisure, among others -- that reflects the average consumption habits of Portuguese households. It's the official inflation indicator in Portugal, calculated and published monthly by INE (Instituto Nacional de Estatística).
Why your savings need to grow, not just exist
If you keep €1,000 under the mattress for 25 years, you'll still have €1,000 -- but with much less purchasing power than when you put it there, because the prices of what you can buy with that money have risen in the meantime. That's why any long-term savings goal is worth considering growth that at least keeps pace with inflation, not just holding the nominal amount steady.
Headline vs. underlying inflation
Headline inflation (the one used in this calculator) includes every category in the basket, including the most volatile ones, like energy and fresh food. Underlying (core) inflation excludes precisely those categories, to show a steadier underlying trend, less exposed to one-off shocks (a drought pushing up vegetable prices, an energy crisis). The two figures tell different stories -- underlying is more useful for spotting the trend, headline is closer to what you actually feel at the supermarket.
About the series used here
The annual figures used in this calculator come from INE's official series, from 2000 to 2025 -- the latest year with a published definitive figure. The current year never appears in the list until it's closed and INE publishes the definitive annual average, usually in January of the following year.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does the CPI measure?
The Consumer Price Index tracks the average change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services consumed by Portuguese households -- food, housing, transport, health, leisure, among others. It's the official inflation indicator in Portugal, calculated monthly by INE.
Why isn't 2026 included?
Because the year hasn't finished yet -- INE only publishes the definitive annual average inflation rate once the civil year is closed. This calculator uses 2025 as the most recent available year, and will be updated once the definitive 2026 figure is published.
Is underlying inflation different from headline inflation?
Yes -- underlying (core) inflation excludes energy and unprocessed food, more volatile categories, to show a steadier underlying trend. This calculator always uses the headline (total) index, the most commonly cited figure and the one that measures the full cost of living.
